Zoeth Howland

1 NOTE Killed by Indians during the famous King Philips War. English had a skirmish with Indians in Tiverton, Newport, RI, south of Howland's Ferry. "Howland was passing through Pocasset, as he was wont to travel, for the purpose of attending themeetings of his sect at Newport. He was waylaid by 6 savages, one of whom went by the name Manasses. Without any provocation, the peaceful Friend was slain in cold blood and the assassins satisfied their passion by mutilating the dead body.Then they carried the mangled corpse to the stream which flows into Nanaquaket Pond at the foot of Highland Road and threw him in the water. His horrified friends, when they discovered the outrage, called the brook 'Sinning Flesh River' the nameby which it has been known to the present day"

1 NOTE Henry left Fen Stanton with his brother Arthur c.1623, probably as passengers on the ship "Anne". They followed their brother John Howland who came over on the Mayflower in 1620. Two U.S. Presidents, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon, descend fromohim.
